Self-Fulfilling Prophecy and Your Kid’s Learning Outcome
Joan Carris who is an enthusiastic educator says, “The term self-fulfilling prophecy means that you will get pretty much what you expect. If you regularly forecast gloom, you will probably get it in one form or another. But if you consciously work toward a positive goal, you are likely to achieve that instead.”
To put this theory into practice, you will get your kid achieve good learning results if you expect the best from him/her. Joan also draws an example:
One famous educational study separated blue-eyed children from brown-eyed ones. The first week, the Blue-Eyes were praised and bolstered all day long in school. Brown-Eyes received frowns and negative criticism.
Result? Blue-Eyes excelled. Brown-Eyes performed terribly.
The next week, educators exalted the Brown-Eyes, who responded with high achievement, while Blue-Eyes regressed alarmingly under the negative treatment.
As parents, we should realize the fact that we will get what we expect from our kids. So give our kids with a "high dose" of praise and encouragement in their learning process. Do target a high achievement with our kids. Of course, be reasonable, not wildly optimistic !
