The Right Way to Pour Ketchup

My two children are ketchup lovers. They will eat a lot of any food that can go with ketchup. Like many people, they all got the wrong way - tapping the bottom of bottles - to pour out ketchup. The worst scenario always happened that after tapping the ketchup bottle for a few moments, nothing came out. All of the sudden, one third of the ketchup in the bottle was out, making a mess all over the table.

Robert Allgeyer writes an interesting and scientific post on the right way of pouring ketchup (via Lifehack), resolving two issues:

(1) How can I get the ketchup to move aside, so that air can enter on the opposite side?

(2) How can I give the ketchup “extra weight,” so that it will be pulled out of the bottle faster?

A reader of Lifehack also suggests a way to tap on the “57” of Heinz ketchup bottle. Interesting and effective techniques!

But for parents of younger children, it is safer and more convenient if you get some ketchup ready in a plastic tube for them to squeeze. It won’t leave you so much mess, I guess.
