10 Tips for Raising a Child who Loves Books and Reading
Elizabeth Kennedy, an experienced educator, posted 10 practical tips for parents on raising a child who loves books and reading. Reading is a habit thing. As parents, we need to consistently introduce “reading” into our children’s daily life. Some parents might wonder if they could follow through all 10 tips in order to bring up a reader. Be relaxed. Among Elizabeth’s 10 tips list, the first four are the easiest to do as you don’t need to be restricted by other variables, like limited finance or available resources around you:
1. Read aloud to your children every day.
2. Get a library card.
3. Take your children to the library once a week.
4. Discuss children’s books with your children.
To be honest, you don’t have to do all these 10 tips in order to raise a child who loves reading. From my experience I just did three of them, i.e. getting library cards for my kids, taking my kids to the nearby library regularly, sometimes once a week but sometimes twice a week, and then spending some time to talk with my kids about what they have read. I found these things really helped them and worked for them. My two kids have grown up as proficient readers right now. They continue to read and enjoy reading everyday. Many kids, of course, need more parental input and motivation to help them build up the reading habit. Take a look at these 10 tips and keep practicing those you can do for your kids.
