Kids’ Acrostic Poems

What is acrostic poem? Here is an example done by my daughter when she’s studying at grade 4:

Joyful
On the way to be cartoonist
You must be her friend
Caring
Every teacher loves her smile

Happy
Often playing on her mum’s computer

She also wrote one about me, that I treasured very much:

Caring
Happy
Respectful
In the kitchen
Supportive
Talent
Intelligent
Noble
Every day she cares for her family

In the process of writing with a framework (using a name or animal), kids’ vocabulary will be expanded and minds stretched. David M. Hummon posted some acrostic poems written by children from grade 2s up to junior high. Worth a look.

If you do homeschooling with your kids, I think you might be interested. Just a suggestion: after reading a book with your child, have your child write an acrostic poem about his/her favourite character. Then post your child’s poem somewhere in his room as an encouragement. Do you think it’s a good idea?
