50 Tips on ADHD Management
In my past post on children’s ADHD, I expressed my doubt on recent trend of trying to use medications to fix “every” problem in its comment field. Over Delicious popular page, a pamphlet which is originally posted in 2004 lists 50 tips on ADHD management. It’s fabulous that I can find such good and precious information through Google delicious bookmarks. The pamphlet highlights the non-medication aspects of the treatment of ADHD and outlines some general principles that apply both to children and adults. Practical tips are suggested and broken down into three areas (one tip for each area quoted for preview):
1. Insight and Education
• Be sure of the diagnosis. Make sure you’re working with a professional who really understands ADHD and has excluded related or similar conditions such as anxiety states, agitated depression, hyperthyroidism, manic-depressive illness, or obsessive-compulsive disorder.2. Performance Management
Make frequent use of:
• lists
• color-coding
• reminders
• notes to self
• rituals
• files3. Mood Management
• Have structured “blow-out” time. Set aside some time in every week for just letting go. Whatever you like to do–blasting yourself with loud music, taking a trip to the race track, having a feast–pick some kind of activity from time to time where you can let loose in a safe way.
Personally, I think some of the tips work for me too. (I don’t think I have ADHD.) But these tips can help me release stress, boost up spirit and increase productivity in life. What do you think about these tips? If you have a child with ADHD, would you think about trying some of the tips?
