Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Kids

Many kids and teens complain of feeling tired all the time. They could be making excuses to avoid school or school work, lack of sleep or overly active in sports. However, have you ever thought that some of them are physically sick? Some researchers believe that if fatigue is prolonged for over 6 months, not alleviated by rest, without any other known medical conditions, then it could be a case of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). According to KidsHealth:

An estimated half a million people in the United States have a CFS-like condition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Chronic fatigue syndrome is more common in females than males and it affects all racial and ethnic groups. CFS usually strikes people between the ages of 20 and 40, but it also occurs in teens. A CFS-like illness also has been determined to occur in children younger than 12. The actual number of children and teens affected by CFS is unknown.
