Flu Shot For Children Under Five
If you have a child between 6 months and 5 years old, you are recommended to have your child vaccinated against influenza (via Reuters). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s immunization advisory committee in Atlanta unanimously accepted the recommendation to press for universal flu vaccination standards:
“Starting with the next influenza season we will not only have children 6 to 24 months but all children up to 5 years of age,” said Dr. Carol J. Baker, president-elect of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, who asked the panel to expand its recommendations.
The committee also recommended that household contacts such as siblings, parents and caregivers of all children 6 months to 5 years of age be immunized against influenza.
Some parents might have concerns about the side effect of flu vaccination. I did have some before. About four years ago, after I talked it through with my family doctor, my family decided to go for it. The flu high session would be from June to August here in Australia. As the flu short has to take three months to be effective, my whole family would have a flu shot around March every year since then. For your situation, it would be good to talk with your family doctor.
