How to Cope with a Colicky Baby
Some babies seem to cry a lot no matter what and how parents do. If your baby cries everyday for hours at a time, you would be worn down to the point that you feel like joining in, wondering if you have done something wrong to make your baby cry like that. An article posted at KidsHealth might ease your bad feelings:
Though all newborns cry and show some fussiness, when a child who is otherwise healthy cries for more than 3 hours per day, it is a condition known as colic, which is perfectly normal, and eventually goes away on its own.
Some possible causes of colic:
- Milk allergy (including breast milk)
- Gas by wallowing too much air
- Baby’s digestive system, either moving too fast or too slow
- Undiagnosed gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Baby’s temperament due to more time needed to adjust to a day and night cycle
Best of all, the article offers possible ways to deal with colicky babies you might find it helpful (seek advice from your pediatrician when needed):
- Walk with your baby or sit in a rocking chair, trying various positions.
- Try burping your baby more often during feedings.
- Place your baby across your lap on his or her belly and rub your baby’s back.
- Put your baby in a swing. The motion may have a soothing effect.
- Put your baby in an infant seat in the back of the car and go for a ride. The vibration and movement of the car often calm a baby.
- Try music tapes, some babies respond to sound as well as movement.
