How To Handle Your Reflux Baby
Getting a baby to swallow medicine is not an easy task, let alone a chronic vomiting baby. Heather sent me these fantastic tips for solving the problem:
My son was diagnosed with GERD, AKA Reflux, at 2 months old because he would writhe and cry during feedings and projectile vomit almost-constantly. Having a name for the condition was very helpful to me personally. While there are many homeopathic remedies, we opted to medicate him with Zantac after consulting our doctor, our friends, the Internet, and our sister-in-law pediatric nurse.
Let me say that getting foul-tasting medicine into a baby is not very easy and though his mood improved markedly, he was still our little puker for the next 4 to 5 months.
Tips for getting medicine in the baby:
- shoot the medicine from an eye dropper into the cheek to bypass gag reflex
- add medicine to bottle of milk to dilute the nasty taste
- squeeze baby’s nose to force mouth open
- add medicine to a bottle nipple with just the medicine (no other liquid) to entice baby to suck medicine past the tongue
- hope for the best
Tips for dealing with a chronic puking baby:
- keep the baby in a bib at all times
- keep burp cloths in every room of the house and the car and the stroller…
- put on a shirt as the last thing you do before leaving
- if you can’t remain topless at home, wear a fleece jacket or bathrobe over your nice clothes
- remember that this too shall pass
