Tips on Preventing Hearing Loss

If your teenagers are music lovers, they are highly at risk of hearing loss when listening to MP3 especially from iPod. Eliot Van Buskirk writes a very good article over at Wirednews.com alarming musicians and music addicts.

A list of tips on how to prevent hearing loss provided on p.2 of his article:

Many people turn their MP3 players up to unsafe volumes to compete with background noise, because in order to hear a song clearly and with a full dynamic range, you need a good amount of signal-to-noise ratio. Rather than turning up your volume, you can achieve the same effect by lowering the “noise” part of the equation. Use sound-isolating headphones (I recommend earbuds from Shure or Etymotic) or noise-canceling headphones (Blomberg recommends the Bose QuietComfort 2).

Everyone knows the importance of turning down the volume of music. But only a few people choose to do so before it’s too late. Maybe, buying our teenagers better-designed headphones is a remedy for slowing down the process of hearing loss.
