Tips for Helping Babies Learn New Words

How do parents really help their babies learn new words? Robert Roy Britt, LiveScience managing editor writes that according to recent study, “babies don’t much care what their parents say” or what their parents think is important. They tend to associate a new word with the object they like best. Our teaching should be based on the interests of the learner. Based on this understanding, here’s a tip: catch them being interested is the key to help they learn effectively.

How can parents know what their babies are interested and help they learn new words?

  • Parents can take notice of what their babies are looking at. From their eyes, you can tell what objects are attractive to them.
  • Very often, babies will try to put things into their mouths. These are the things they are interested.
  • Point to the object they are looking at, and name it. Repeat the new word several times. According to research, babies learn by repetitions. Your babies will associate the word with the stated object.
