Commandments for People With Problems Sleeping
Sleep is a good medicine to ease stress. But not everyone can fill the prescription. Instead, people are getting lesser and lesser sleep for various reasons. I’ve read an interesting article talking about why moms can’t sleep. Kids and busy schedules are the major reasons. But did you know that countless women just enjoy being up during the wee hours? Why? Click here to find out. (I think it’s also true to dads.)
What if you don’t enjoy being a night owl and have trouble sleeping? GuidetoSleep.com posted 13 essential things (adapted from: Dr. Meir Kryger’s A Woman’s Guide to Sleep Disorders) that you can do to ensure a better sleep:
1. Use the bedroom for sleep and sex only. This is no place to balance your checkbook, surf the internet, or run on a treadmill. You want your brain to only associate your bedroom with sleep and sex and not those other activities.
2. If you can’t fall asleep, after fifteen to twenty minutes get out of bed and do something else that is relaxing. Lying in bed, becoming angry and frustrated because you’re not falling asleep makes things worse.

I used to like to get up really early and stay up really late. With four small children in the house, that was my time. I’ve always been a writer, and when the house was quiet and everyone else asleep, I could do my own thing. I have finally managed to learn how to go to bed fairly early - 10-11 PM but the mornings are still a habit - I wake up at 5 or 6 AM and still enjoy my hour or two of privacy.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism this time last year, and one of the symtoms of the disorder is insomnia. I dutifully followed all the tips listed in the “Commandments for Peole with Problems Sleeping” and still could not sleep peacfully thorough the night. For me, Tylenol PM helps me get a full night sleep, although I don’t recommend doing this without talking to your docotor first. Also, be aware of when you take vitamins and other supplements. I have found that if I take any of those later than about 4-5 p.m. (my usual bed time is 11), then I have trouble sleeping despite the Tylenol.
