Ways To Soothe a Crying Baby (Part 2)
My sister had a very hard time with her baby girl who is 17 years old now. At that time, her two-week old couldn’t stop crying from 11pm until 5am nearly every night, regardless of my sister’s every effort and trial , including feeding, bathing, soothing/rocking changing nappy, playing music….everything that a witty parent can think of and do. My sister also brought her baby to see a pediatrician and was confirmed that her baby hadn’t got any sickness at all. What she’s only got was a term for her baby, that is “colic”. She was told there’s no cure at all. So frustrated. The whole family of my sister had gone through a month of sleepless nights. My sister was almost pushed to the point of nervous breakdown.
At last, she found a way to soothe her crying baby – a strap-on baby carrier – told by her mother-in-law actually. Whenever my sister’s baby girl was to be carried walking around for a while, she stopped crying and fell asleep. We thought that her baby girl might want to hear her mother’s heartbeat and feel body warmth.
Here are other possible ways to soothe babies with colic (via bupa.co.uk) :
- carry the baby in a front sling or back pack
- wrap him or her snugly in a blanket (this is called swaddling)
- keep the baby moving in a baby swing
- place him or her near continuous noise or vibrations from household appliances like the dishwasher, vacuum cleaner or washer-dryer
- take him or her for a car ride or a walk outside
- give him or her a dummy to suck on
- give him or her tummy or back rubs
- take a shower together - the warm water may be comforting
